This week I had to help my mother and my big sister make Thanksgiving Dinner. This year was the first time I actually helped out with the cooking on Thanksgiving Day. Now that I had prior knowledge from learning a lot in my cooking throughout the semester in class at school they thought I would be able to be part of the group this year. When I got up that morning, I was excited to know that Thanksgiving Day was going to be a very hot mess in the kitchen with me cooking with them. We made Tamales de Elote, Pupusas con Curtido, Panes con Pollo, but as for drinks and deserts we had to buy them because we couldn’t possibly make everything from scratch. The hours of long work in the kitchen and preparing the food are always worth it since at the end it’s to be able to share a meal with my family. We bought all our supplies a day before the cooking, but we started cooking early around ten in the morning. The role of food in my family is to unite everybody and to have an enjoyable time, because it is a tradition to have a big family dinner for special events such as birthdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Thanksgiving breaks let us reunite again and have fun. We all need that break more often. My sister is always busy going to working or going to school or running errands that we don’t even get to talk as much as we used to. In addition, the conversations around the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day are for us to forget the chaos of everyday life. Also, for us to catch up, bring back wonderful memories, and talk about our blessings. A tradition we always have before eating a big meal or any small simple meal is to pray for our food.
