Blue Mountain is a ski resort located just outside of Collingwood, Ontario in Grey County in the Town of Blue Mountains. It sells more than 750, 000 lift tickets per year, making it the third-busiest ski resort in Canada, after Whistler-Blackcomb in B.C. and Mount Tremblant in Quebec.
Blue Mountains development started in 1941, when the Jozo Weider and his family moved into an existing farm at the base of the escarpment. Jozo ad his family had emigrated to Canada in 1939, first settling in Peace River, Alberta. The next year, his entire family moved to Quebec, working at the Alpine Inn in Sainte-Marguerite-du-Lac-Masson. When the Weider family moved into the farm, he built a small chalet at what is now the north end of the hill, the “Blue Mountain Lodge”, and started clearing trails by hand. A single ski lift consisted of two sleds pulled up the hill by a cable running on the ground and powered by a truck engine, serving three runs, “Schuss”, “Granny” and “Kandahar”.
The present day Blue Mountain now features 36 runs, 15 chairlifts and 3 freestyle terrains and offers many other activities for both summer and winter. In the summer, Blue Mountain maintains a climbing wall, hiking trails, a private beach, and offers downhill mountain biking. Also during the summer there is a small waterpark, The Plunge, which has an indoor and outdoor
