Unfortunately government loopholes allow the oil and gas industry to not fully disclose all of the chemicals they use in their slurry. Researchers have found out that many are known endocrine disruptors, which are chemicals that may interfere with the body's endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife. Slurries also can contain carcinogens which are substances capable of causing cancer (foodandwaterwatch.org). Some oil companies will go as far as bribing landowners with the promise of improved infrastructure, new wastewater facilities or even make charitable donations to schools and local parks. The reason behind all of this bribing is to distract communities from the destroyed roadways and polluted land and contaminated water that was left behind from the extraction process (Bjorklund). There are more than 22,000 people that are un aware that what is causing them to feel sick could be something right inside your home that you physically cannot live without, just simple tap water and the air we breathe can be contaminated by …show more content…
Fossil fuel emissions are the leading source of climate altering greenhouse gases from human activity. The Increased concentration is intensifying the greenhouse effect by making layers of greenhouse gasses thicker, trapping more heat, and releasing less energy back to the atmosphere. On a global scale, drilling and fracking result in significant greenhouse gas emissions, which threaten our climate (Zott). Failures during drilling also can have a negative impact on our surrounding environment. Reported evidence has stated that these failures during the drilling and extraction process have polluted the air, poisoned the water, and threatened the health and safety of people. In the long term, our planet cannot accommodate the current levels of greenhouse gas emissions released from human activities such as driving, power plants, and natural gas extraction. Climate change is believed to affect the water cycle and cause more extreme weather events including heat waves, floods, and droughts. Also becoming more common are tropical cyclones and other severe storms (Zott). Another way that fracking can damage our environment is what the wastewater from the end of the process is used for. A great deal of times, the same contaminated water is used to melt ice and snow off roadways making the substance that the contaminated water melted also contaminated water. Once that substance is now turned into contaminated runoff water, it seeps
