The builders of the Panama Canal faced many problems. One problem they faced was being able to build it. When Roosevelt told Columbia about his plan they refused his offer. Roosevelt knew the Panamanians wanted to break free and would support the rebellion. ON November 2nd,1903 the American warship Nashville dropped anchor in the port of Panama. The next day Panama rebelled against Columbia.
American forces stopped Columbian troops from crushing the revolt which lead to
Panama declaring itself independent from Columbia. The Untied States recognized them as a new nation and Panama agreed to let them bold a canal. A second problem they faced was disease. Panama has a tropical climate with heavy heat, rainfall, and plentiful swamps. This is the perfect condition for mosquitos.
Mosquitos carry two of the deadliest diseases, malaria and yellow fever. Dr. William
Gorgas went to Panama to help control all the disease. He told the workers to drain the swamps, spray tons of insecticide, and spread oil on stagnant waters to kill mosquito eggs. In 1906, he won the battle and work was able to proceed. This taught us many lessons that we can apply to our daily lives. We learned sometimes things take longer than we expect, but will work in the long run. At first they had many diseases there, but with effort and handwork they were able to conquer it. We need to apply this to our everyday lives. When we do things and think there is an issue or face a problem we have to put the effort and handwork in and you can probably figure it out.
