No color, everything is the same, and people have to live there every, single day. I would not want to live in the society of The Giver. The rules are extremely strict, freedom is stripped from people, and modern day activities and traditions are taken away.
To start, rules are extremely strict. First ,”Needless to say, he will be released.” (Lowry 4). For just a small mistake, the pilot was released from the community. Second, ”There was never any way to mention or discuss one’s success without breaking the rules of bragging.” (Lowry 27).People are punished for bragging for just talking of others success, even on accidents. Third, ”He knew he had to tell it all” (Lowry 34). Jonas knew he had to tell everything about his dream because the laws about lying are strictly enforced. For example, freedom is stripped from the people. As a result, ”Rules were extremely hard to change...unlike the governing age for bicycles.” (Lowry 14). Freedom was taken from people including the age to ride a bicycle which could be learned at almost any age over 4. Next, ”Two children-one male, one female-to each family unit. On the other hand, ”I enjoy the naming.”(Lowry 12). The people had almost brainwashed people into forgetting a tradition known since the beginning. Additionally, ”Many of the comfort objects, like Lily’s, were soft, stuffed, imaginary creatures. Jonas’s had been called bear.” (Lowry 19). The community hid the past and the outside world from these people, they took color, animals, and differences from the community.
