The first Universal Truth is The Importance of Knowledge and Truth. In “The Giver”, we are introduced to a society where everyone is given their life for them. In a this society, the importance of Knowledge and Truth is not valued at all. The citizens of this community have no idea how their community came to be or what was before. The elders have take away, family, love and joy. These things have been taken away to achieve “equalness”. However, they also took away war, hatred and violence because it is horrible This society doesn’t honor this universal truth because the elders have lied to the citizens about pretty much everything. We know our history and that our leaders are doing their best to benefit us. They have been taught that love and joy are fake feelings that mean nothing. When the Giver was educating Jonas about how the receiver’s perspective is going to be different after the memories and how the memories are a precious thing, the Giver elaborates on the condition of the community and says, "They know nothing” (Lowry, 105) When the Giver says this, he means that no one in the community knows the actual truth. It pains both the Giver and Jonas to watch these people who they care about who have so much potential just walk around being controlled by all of the rules, when they could be so much more.
