In this Writing Project, my audience is young adults to adults who watch the 60 Minutes television program. I wanted to reach an older audience because the short story that I am translating requires thinking beyond what is written and forming your own conclusions. The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas is a philosophical short story that can be interpreted however the reader wants. The ending of the short story is vague and leaves the reader guessing and wondering about what happened to the people who walked away. In this genre translation, I decided to interview a 17 year old girl named Kai who walked away from Omelas and ended up in Seattle.

I was able to take the original story and turn it into an interview about a person and place that doesn’t exist. I also chose my interviewee to be a teenager because it's a time in life that is filled with moments of self discovery and reflection. Although Kai knew about the secret for seven years, it was during her her last few years of teenage hood that she had the dream and decided to walk away. I think that often teenagers are portrayed as selfish and self-centered, so I wanted Kai to be a character that was extremely self reflective and straightforward. She gave the interviewer blunt answers and didn’t sugar coat anything.
What I think I struggled with during this genre translation was conveying the emotions that Kai went through after her traumatic experience from seeing the child of Omelas at such a young age. I decided that maybe I should just omit describing the emotions and focus on the setting. My reason for doing this was because I wanted my audience to picture themselves in Kai’s shoes and have them form their own emotions. I wanted this interview to be similar to the original story, I wanted the reader to make their own
