Fredrick Douglass played an important role in the abolitionist movement with his speeches and writing. In one of his books he explains how he escaped slavery, but even as a free man he still had to face racial issues in life. In his biography, he states he had to sign this paper called the free color paper. This paper declared him a free man in the eyes of the public and law, but he had to keep this document on him at all times. Fredrick Douglass was born in mid-February 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland. His mother was a slave, but his father was found to be his mother's master. He was separated from his mother during childhood and was sent to live with his grandmother. Although he knew that he wasn’t allowed to attend school, he taught himself
