It’s often challenging for someone to understand something that they are not familiar with. Although this isn’t a good thing, it is a big trend in Maycomb County. Because of all the myopic views, people are constantly misjudged to be someone they’re not. In To Kill a Mockingbird we learn that people are not always what we initially believed them to be because Boo Radley wasn’t evil, Mrs. Dubose was fighting her addiction, and Mr. Dophus Raymond wasn’t a drunk. However, near the end of the book, when you finally meet him, he isn’t nearly as bad as everyone says. In fact, he even saved Jem and Scout’s lives. People are not always what we initially believed them to be because Mrs. Dubose was fighting her addiction. Every time Jem and Scout walked past her, she would yell something cruel to them. She had nothing nice to say and the children despised her for it. For instance, she once shouted, “Don’t you say hey to me, you ugly girl” (Lee 103). However, when the children finished working for her, they found out she was actually addicted to morphine. The whole time the kids had been reading to her, she had been going through great amounts of pain. Mrs. Dubose wasn’t mean like everyone thought, she was actually brave enough to try to stop taking morphine. People are not always what we initially believed them to be because Mr. Dolphus Raymond was not drunk. Mr. Dolphus Raymond was a white man who had mixed children. The town believed him to be drunk because he would stumble around and drink from a paper bag. But when Scout and Dill met him, his drink turned out to be coca cola. They found out that he wasn’t actually drunk, he just pretended to be
