Conflict and war is an inevitable part of human society. Despite the numerous decades that has taken place, the effects of both world wars are still apparent till this day. During those treacherous periods of time, one of the most appealing yet simple posters drew in an enormous amount of support for the American war effort. That poster was known as the "I Want You" Uncle Sam poster. The stern and authoritative man staring directly at the reader while embodying the outfit of a true American, was too sensational for citizens during that time. Other than the well-dressed man and a couple of words, there was nothing more to it. Yet the powerful message of patriotism it incorporated, moved the hearts of people across the country.
The creator of this poster, James Flagg, was a well-known cartoonist and artist during the 1900's. At the age of 12, Flagg already had multiple illustrations be accepted by national magazines. When he was 14 years old, Flagg had already begun illustrating items for magazines. By the age of 38, Flagg was already working for a company and creating advertisements for them. Whether if you were able to enlist in the army or not, looking at this poster will make the audience feel a sense of patriotism. The significance of this poster was that it didn't specifically state who they wanted. The poster just says "I want YOU for U.S Army". The "You" specified in the poster was completely susceptible to anyone. Thus, if you were able to read then you were their targeted audience. It was essentially stating to the audience to support the war effort in any way that they are able to.
