Therefore, as a trainee for an academy, trainee should learn how to legally justified use of firearms and handling skills. Besides being a deadly tool, knowing how to maintain service of your weapon is also important to keep it in a good working condition. An example on a day to day basis, an officer may want to check their firearms to see if they’re in good working conditions. By doing so, if a serious situation calls for deadly force, the officer’s firearm will fire correctly and will not malfunction at the time of use.
Not only does the unified tactics involve in communication and firearms but defense and arrest tactics (DAAT) is another important skill to learn. In an EVOC session, trainees will learn the basis of patrolling and responding to incident. From there on, trainees will understand that justification for pursuit driving and legal context for law enforcement driving. Just because officers are in a marked squad car and has authority, does not mean that they are allowed to roam in other jurisdiction whenever they want to. There are times when an officer can and cannot do such things. Additionally, EVOC will show officers the different kinds of driving strategies and techniques to perform while on duty.
Last but not least, vehicle contact is important for trainees to understand how to make vehicle contact and when to approach, not approach and identify high risk contacts. Making traffic stop can be one of the dangerous duty for a law enforcement officer. Because officers are unaware of what lies ahead in a vehicle, officers should understand and make any threat assessment to determine type of contact.
Overall, unified tactical area of training in law enforcement is crucial to understand. Being a sworn officer with a badge and a gun will not make the officer any safer.
