“It was the most natural thing in the world for me to imagine that mice and squirrels might have feelings just like mine,”(How to be Like Walt ) said Walt Disney. It was this unusual type of thinking that led to Walt being remembered as a creative inspiration to many. Walt Disney is remembered as such because he found his passions when he was young, followed his dream, and started a world renowned company. WC: 72 Our story begins on December fifth, 1901 in Chicago Illinois. Walter Elias Disney was born the fourth of five children to Flora and Elias Disney. Walt never had a birth certificate, or any other record of his birth. At fourteen, he took his first professional art class. “He had demonstrated a flair for drawing since his Marceline days and no began to attend art classes for children at the Kansas City Art Institute. He supplemented this talent with a new interest in performing and entertainment,”(Magic) said Steven Watts, author of “The Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney and the American Way of Life”. Two years later, Walt opened his first company. His friend Ub Iwerks partnered with him to start Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists. “The original name was Disney-Iwerks, but they decided that sounded like an optical company.” (Magic) This was Disney’s start in salesmanship as well as cartooning. The business was too small to last, however, so after only a month, Iwerks-Disney Commercial Arts closed its doors. This was for the best as soon after, Walt joined the Kansas City Film Ad Company, where he began to produce minute long animated advertisements to play before movies. Walt got experimental with the process, looking into animation and motion, compiling information about photostats and tracing. His employer lent him a stop motion camera, which he used to create a small garage studio. He made his own animations and parted ways with the Kansas City Film Ad Company to make his own films.He began making short films for the Newman Theatre Company called Laugh-O-Grams. Competitors and friends alike referred to the film as Disney’s Little Folley, none quite expecting it to turn out. The premier of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was held in Carthay Circle Theater, and it later received a specialized academy award for best animated feature film. Of course, it was the only animated feature film at the time. Disney later referred to his burbank studio in California as the “House that Snow White built.”(Hollywood) Walt made television shows during this time as well, the most popular being the Mickey Mouse Club. He made a point to add a specific phrase to the end of every episode: “See you real soon! Why? Because we like you!”, saying every child deserves to be told once a day that they are liked. (Magic) As Walt’s company grew, so did tension amongst Walt and Roy, Walt and different production companies, and most importantly Walt and Himself. He had a knack for getting angry at himself or others when the net of time “stopped tomorrow's tasks from being completed yesterday.”( Conversations) A fight between Roy and Walt lasted for years, with the brothers barely talking for the duration.
