Was the American invasion of Afghanistan launched in 2001 justified? To answer this question fully, we must compare the United States’s public reasons for the invasion to both the legal and moral justification that the United States (US) had for the invasion and also any other possibility and hidden agenda that the US may have for the invasion.

On September the 20th following the 9/11 attacks George W. Bush said this “On September 11th, enemies of freedom committed an act of war against our country.” And demanded the Taliban (an extremist terrorism group in Afghanistan) to “hand over all the leaders of Al Qaida”, “Release all foreign nationals, including American citizens”, “Protect foreign journalists, diplomats, and aid workers” and “hand over every terrorist and every person in their support structure to appropriate authorities.” Due to the Taliban being unresponsive, the US government decided on an invasion of Afghanistan with its public aims to dismantle Al Quada and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power.

This operation quickly gained support from other countries although for the first year no more than 5000 US and UK troops were involved in Afghanistan.

Its focus was to train the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and assist Afghanistan in rebuilding key government institutions. It also played a role in the war against the Taliban.
