Jeremy Bentham introduces his audience to the principle of utility in “Principles of Morals and Legislation.” In this reading, Bentham discusses that humans do things for the purpose of either gaining pleasure or avoiding pain. For this reason, we use the principle of utilitarianism as a guide to determine between what is right and wrong in any given situation. Utilitarianism approves or disapproves of an action depending on whether it increases or decreases the happiness of the certain party involved (Bentham 14). By balancing the benefits and harm, the better course of action is the one that produces the more benefits. As a supporter of utilitarianism, Bentham’s main concern and focus is providing the maximum amount of benefits and happiness for the largest amount of people. Each individual claim to either be pro-life or pro-choice; however, even though they strongly support their argument, there is no definite correct side because nobody can truly agree on what is right or wrong. In recent news, a young ten-year-old girl from northern India was constantly raped by her uncle. The victim was denied abortion due to an act in India that specifies abortion as illegal if the pregnancy is more than twenty weeks along. The young girl was not aware of her pregnancy until she began to have stomach pains. The family then discovered the pregnancy was too far along for the girl to have an abortion. The victim gave birth to the child this past August. In a situation like this, there is obvious debate on whether the right choice was made.
