Racial discrimination has been a long-standing issue in the United States of America. In the centuries since it’s been established, America has witnessed inhumane cruelty against people of color, such as slavery, segregation, Jim Crow laws, the internment of Japanese civilians during WWII, and many more unfortunate events within our country’s history. While racial discrimination can come in many forms, in this essay I want to focus on one that has caught my eye recently and that is racial profiling. Racial profiling refers to the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on their race, ethnicity, or national origin. Racial profiling is destructive as it negatively affects the opinions and attitudes of communities of color towards police. Not only does racial profiling destroy people of color’s trust in their law enforcement, racial profiling can even result in physical consequences and in some tragic cases, even death.The stories of Jonny Gammage, Amadou Diallo, and Timothy Thomas are grim reminders of the fatal consequences of racial profiling. If we as a people ever want to progress, we need to stop this. We need to have all communities be able to trust those who work to protect them. The question is, though, how? How can we address and reduce cases of racial profiling in the United States?

Awareness is a crucial step in fighting against police racial profiling, as it is with any other cause that is worth addressing. The more people who become aware of the inhumane practices of these evil police officers, the more of a chance we have at ending racial police profiling altogether. If you want to draw a crowd towards the cause, people should start by posting on social media. People can create pages based off of police racial profiling and write posts about the history of it, as well as pushing out the message that we need to fight against it together. If people do not want to post on social media for whatever reason, they can also put papers or posters up around their town that have messages about racial profiling or racism as a whole and they can of course just spread the word by mouth! After bringing awareness to the issue, people can then form protests in hopes of grabbing the attention of important figures in legislation who hold the power to make a change in our world. If everyone just gathers together and, as a group, fights against racial abuse by those who hold more power than the average citizen, we may have a chance at minimizing racial profiling not only in Connecticut but everywhere as
