Born in Dorchester, Maryland in 1820, Harriet was born into slavery. Tubman was one of the 9 children of Ben Ross and Harriet Greene. But Harriet’s siblings were sold to different plantations. Her original name was Araminta Ross, but later adopted her mother’s first name, Harriet. She worked many different occupations such as a nurse, cook, maid, a field hand, and as a woodcutter. In 1844, Harriet married a free man by the name of John Tubman.
