Sports is just an entertainment and pro athletes get paid hundreds of millions of dollars to play a sport. However people like soldiers, police or firemen get paid a lot less than athletes to put life in the line to protect others. These people work irregular hours and all year long to meet their needs. Where athletes only play a season in a year and make a lot more than them. But this is not the athletes fault for making so much money. It all comes down to basic economy of supply and demand.
Everybody needs entertainment in their everyday life. This is what keeps us energetic and motivated to go to work the next day. The demand for watching sports will never go down. It will only grow with time. As the demand goes up, the franchise starts to charge more to maximize their profit. However franchise cannot make money if they are not keeping their players. Therefore they have to pay their players a lot more than usual.

However it’s not always just money. Most pro athletes are at their peak for only 5 years on average. In this 5 years they make more money than most people ever make in their whole life time. To get to the top of their all-time best performance, athletes have to sacrifice a lot. They sacrifice their education, family time without knowing if they will actually make it to the top. For example if fans look at March Madness. There are 68 teams in March Madness with over 600 players. However, only about less 10% of those players make it to NBA. Rest have to look for a new career when they finish college. Players who made it to the top had to work really hard and fight tooth and nails to make it there, to earn that big cheque.
