Why Do Athletes Get Paid?

Athletes deserve their high salaries. Though the size of their salaries may be striking, it is deserved for the risky and short careers they have. Don Majkowski, a former quarterback, suffered dramatically from his football injuries. After his retirement, he could barely walk or stand for extended periods of time. During his career of 17 years, he had almost 20 surgeries on his ankle, shoulder, and back. How could you fight to lessen the salaries of people who have suffered like him?

Don Majkowski is a great example of how difficult and injurious pro-sports can be. The majority of average citizens will not have that many surgeries in such a short period of time. If someone were to have that many, it is unlikely they would be as a result of injuries during work. Players put themselves on the line mentally and physically every practice and game. However, lowering the pay of sports professionals will not bring it to these people. The money will simply return to managers and owners, who definitely don’t deserve as much as the athletes. The money is consumer money, not government money. Opposers still might say “Taxpayers pay for stadiums!” This is also somewhat true, but also completely irrelevant to their argument. Our government collects money for stadiums to up tourism in the area and help strengthen the economy.
