We need them to help treat and cure diseases that threaten humans around the world. Animals have already been a huge help. They are responsible for medicine that treats breast cancer and lung cancer. They are responsible for advancements in therapy for HIV and AIDS. They are responsible for breakthroughs in stroke prevention (Americans for Medical Progress). They are also responsible for saving countless lives. Several deadly diseases such as, heart diseases, diabetes, and ALS, only have treatments because of animal testing (Foundation for Biomedical Research). Four of the top ten, death-causing diseases could only be treated with the help of animals. Heart transplants are caused by the number one leading cause of death, heart disease (Nichols), but heart transplants were first tested on dogs to see if they were able to save people. Tests on dogs such as a heart stoppers and surgery techniques were the first steps in a successful heart transplant in a human. The treatment for diabetes, insulin, was only accomplished through dogs and fish (Foundation for Biomedical Research), but the 38% of people who think animal testing is immoral, as of 2008, aren’t aware of certain facts (Public …show more content…
People claim that testing on animals is immoral and that animals and humans are equal (Animal Liberation). Then why are they still on leashes, and why are they kept in cages for people to look at? These people also claim that animal testing is not reliable. “Mice, the most popular model for disease research, have over 92 percent genetic similarity to the human genome. Nonhuman primates, such as chimpanzees, are 98 percent genetically similar to humans” (Trull). If you eat meat you are eating chickens, pigs, or cows that live in horrible conditions. They are slaughtered and genuinely treated cruelly. If animal testing were to be as cruel as people say, it still wouldn’t be able to compare to the horrors that happen in the slaughterhouses. It is also contradictory to say that animal testing is cruel, and still eat
