Should School Start Times Be Later? Is pushing back school start times actually beneficial for students, teachers, and parents? Students complain they don’t get enough sleep before the next school day, but they should be responsible enough to go to bed at a certain time to get enough sleep. If their parents or guardians take them to school and they work a nine-to-five work shift, pushing school start can push back their time slots, too. Some might say having school times start later can be helpful, which is true in some parts, like students can get more sleep so they can be more active during the school day. Even if we push back the school start times, students may think they can go to sleep later, and not wake up until later. If people don’t get enough sleep, they should consider going to bed earlier. Studies show that screen time right before sleep can interrupt your sleep schedule. Reading a book, listening to music, and stretching can help you fall asleep more easily. Other activities may need to be rescheduled, and that can be a lot of work. Let’s say you have a therapy session after school at 4:30 pm. School start times have been changed to an hour later. This means your therapist has to reschedule not only your appointment, but other clients after you. Also, doctors, coaches, therapists, tutors, and other people won’t work later, which means appointments may have to be scheduled during the school day. That defeats the purpose of having school start later. Lastly, later start times can disturb an individual's organization in the morning.
