Caden Smoker Mr. Dorn ELA 7, Hour # 2 Date 3-15-24 School Should Start Later Imagine you or your kid driving to school in the morning. It’s dark, they’re tired, and it’s hard for them to pay attention to the road. Now all of a sudden they get involved in a car wreck. All because their school insisted on starting school at 7:00 am, your child is now injured. Is that worth the risk to you? All for school when it could have just started later? I don’t think so, and many agree. School starts too early and it needs to change. Schools should start later in the day for multiple reasons, the first being your attention span will be better, along with your grades improving. This is incredibly true for students who wake up super early without the sleep they need. According to the article, “How Would Later Start Times Affect Sleep,” by Eric Suni, it states, “later school start times improved attendance, decreased tardiness showed improvement in grades and fewer kids fell asleep in class” (Suni). This proves the impact more sleep can have on students. Since students aren't falling asleep in class as much, this means they are paying attention and also means our future is going to see more success. Another piece of evidence is that it is tough to learn, especially when you do not have enough sleep. As stated in the article titled, “10 Reasons Why Schools Should Start Later,” it says, “studies showed that an extra hour of sleep increased attention levels of adolescents” (Drew). This proves that with a later start time for school, attention span increases which leads to a better future for students. Therefore, school should start later, especially since we know what only one extra hour of sleep can do for
