Many events in my life lead me to chose Social Work as a career choice such as my volunteer, employment, and personal experiences. When I was in high school I decided to get more involved with my school by joining a club. The one club that stood out to me was International club because it encouraged students from all backgrounds to get together and volunteer for multiple events around Indiana. Our mission was to improve the community by lending a helping hand. I truly believe that if a child has someone who actually cares about them and makes sure they are okay, then their life maybe a little easier. Growing up was difficult because my mother had four children she had to raise alone. My father was an illegal immigrant who couldn't find a good stable job because he didn't have papers and because his High School diploma was from Mexico, so it was not useful. My father ended up selling drugs to put food on the table and was eventually arrested and deported. My mother worked multiple factory jobs but all the hard labor did not pay enough. Thankfully she was able to get food stamps from the state and medicaid for me and my brothers. However, she still struggled to support us. We all lived in a two bedroom apartment in the worst park of town. My mother became an alcoholic to cope with her depressed. One day when my mother was very drunk she put her hands on me and my sister. She ended up apologizing and promised to change, which she did. She stopped drinking and found a good job that offer great benefits, we ended up moving to some nicer apartments and when to a better school system. My mother was able to save up money and
