When I was a kid, my father always used to tell me the story of his life, but he would change the names of all of the people in it, so I thought that it was some kind of incredible fictional story. I’m just as awestruck now as I was back then. From escaping war-torn Ethiopia on foot in 1979 after being jailed as a political prisoner for criticizing the communist government, to making a living in Saudi Arabia after starting with zero possessions, to making the bold move to leave it all to start a new life in America, my father’s life story has taught me an important lesson of pride, perseverance, and persistently working hard. She always tells me that if I had told her that she would be raising a family in America when she was younger, she would have thought I was crazy. When she immigrated to America from Ethiopia, she was suddenly thrust into an unfamiliar environment where she didn’t even know the language. But she persevered and not only learned to speak English, but also worked incredibly hard to be one of the few in her class to earn an LPN certificate for nursing. Throughout my life she has taught me the value and power of education, and is living proof that through learning, anyone can achieve what they want. She is the reason I take my education so seriously. She has also raised me according to the values of Islam, teaching me to always do what’s right, always respect others, and especially important in today’s climate, always act as a representative and be proud of my religion no matter what people say.
