History:
Adolf Butenandt was a leading researcher in sex hormones. In 1931, Butenandt isolated androsterone and soon later in 1934, the chemist isolated progesterone as well as testosterone. From these finds, Butenandt and Hanisch, two leading scientists in the field, were able to provide the hormone for human use. Due to the nature of these hormones they were able to use them to normalize hormone levels in men with deficiencies that may impair normal growth. During World War II from 1940-1945, the Germans were experimenting with steroids believing they may give a possible edge on the battlefield. Studies have shown that the even the most harmful effects of anabolic steroids are usually still associated with chronic conditions. This mean there is no true “lethal dose” for anabolic steroids currently known.
Legal issues:
Since 1991, anabolic steroids have been a schedule 3 drug on the banned substance list. This means, without a prescription, anabolic steroids are illegal for anybody in the United States to possess. Anabolic steroids are often used as ergogenic aids in sports. Use of these substances is banned by Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, the International Olympic Committee and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The ban is due to anabolic steroids unfair advantage on its user as well as the harmful side effects associated with the use. The MLB has put anabolic steroids in their performance enhancing drugs category. First time users will suffer a 50 game suspension, 2nd time users 100 games and 3rd time offenders will be banned for life. In a normal population, 1st time offenders can receive up to 1 year in jail and/or a $1000 fine for possession of anabolic steroids, (U.S. Department of Justice, 1991).
