In fact, the Europeans relied on Africans to do additional work such as “clearing forests, mining, etc.”(Indian Slavery Americas, 2013, Page 1). Demographic reasons are somewhat part of the reason why African slavery was preferred over the others. The Spaniards found out that the Indian slave was “inefficient” and that one negro was worth four Indians. The future of the new world, “sugar”, “cotton”, etc. required strong individuals. The Indians “lacked the strength” required to develop and take care of the cotton, sugar, “new world” (Capitalism and Slavery, 1944, page 9). They were not as strong as the negros when it came to planting, agriculture, etc. Not only that, but the Indians carried a cheaper price and they were limited in supply in comparison to the Africans. Similarly, the Europeans in Barbados were not very productive. Africans were also in Barbados. The necessities of production were “not handled well” by the Europeans.
