There are so many stories, data and theories regarding the effectiveness of the flu shot over the years. However, some of the data regarding the effectiveness of the flu shot does not have solid proof that it has actually worked at controlling the flu virus. Bystrianyk complied data from the CDC’s “Leading Causes of Death” that shows that there was a steady decline in deaths from the flu until the flu vaccine was introduced; when patients started receiving the flu vaccine, deaths from the flu increased (Bystrianyk, 2013). Patients have rights as a patient and can refuse treatment; however, employees do not seem to have the same rights and the employers and government can mandate this to protect patients and/or public safety if you are working in a healthcare organization. “ A CDC analysis of flu vaccine effectiveness for the past decade – from 2005 to 2015 - demonstrated that more than half the time, seasonal flu shots are less than 50 percent effective” (Fisher, 2016).
