The challenge to” love one another as I have loved you” (john 13:34-35) applies to the Catholic Church in Australia’s response to the issue of asylum seekers and refugees who come to Australia in the hopes of finding a better and safer future for themselves and their families. Caring about someone, being kind to someone and protecting someone, all fall under the category of loving someone. To love someone is to help them when they need it most, to show them you care and to strive to help them achieve a good and fulfilling and happy life. As Christians the Australian Catholic Church believes that we must accept, welcome and love refugees and asylum seekers in their trials and help them to achieve a better life.
