• Born in a poor Irish neighborhood in eastern New York City

• William H. Bonney is who he called himself
• Original name- Henry McCarty
• 1865, moved west with brother to Indiana, also with mother and stepdad Antrin
• Moved again by 1870, the family had made it to Wichita, Kansas
• 1874, his mom died of lung cancer
• After mother died, Billy left his family and moved off into New Mexico sagebrush.
• Job was ranch hand
• 1876, he supposedly killed his first men ever, these men were Indians, the apache’s
• Became part of the Lincoln county war.
• He became a leader of a vigilante posse of “regulators” sent to arrest the killers.
• His gang shot Lincoln sheriff Bill Brady dead.
• Rival gang surrounded his house and the siege lasted for 5 days in July 1878
• U.S. army squadron was called in to help
• His gang never surrendered.
• Got out of town on escape shootout with gang with him
• Got arrested after years on the run
• April of 1881, he was found guilty of the murder of the sheriff he shot
• Judge sentenced to hang him
• 2 weeks before he was supposed to be hung, he broke out of jail on April 28th
• Garret found Billy on July 14, 1881 and shot Billy dead while visiting his girl
• He died at 21.
