Education. The new and controversial Common Core standards have set the guidelines for almost every student in the United States. Whether they are effective is still being questioned by many.
“With Common Core Standards, the expectation is that all students have the same knowledge and learning at various stages in their educational process and then graduate with a common group of skills that will enable them to succeed in college or career,” says Kristina Valentine from the Illinois State Board of Education, “I think that many people do not like change, and this is a change.”
It wasn’t until the 2013-14 school year the standards were adopted in over 40 states. Created by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State Schools Officers (CCSSO), the standards were made to, “ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live.”
