Concussions are traumatic brain injuries that alter the way your brain functions.

These brain injuries may occur when the head or upper body are vigorously shaken. This

is usually common in professional and high school contact sports. This includes football,

basketball, and cheerleading. In almost all cases, people recover completely and have no

permanent symptoms. Rarely, people can go on without knowing they have a concussion

in the first place because headaches and nausea can be common issues for people. Some

red flags that can determine directly for concussions are sleep disturbances, memory

complaints, etc.

Although rare, cases like these can be fatal. It is important to check for certain symptoms

in order to spot such a brain injury early to prevent more trauma.

Symptoms to look out for when checking for concussions may include:

“headaches or pressure in the head, temporary loss of consciousness, confusion or feeling

as if in a fog, amnesia surrounding the traumatic event, dizziness or seeing stars, ringing

in the ears, nausea, vomiting, slurred speech, delayed response to questions, appearing

dazed, and prolonged fatigue”. In some cases, these symptoms may be hard to detect

considering some of them are even symptoms of a common cold. More severe and

alarming symptoms that may point to specifically a concussion include: Concentration

and memory complaints, irritability and other personality changes, sensitivity to light and

noise, sleep disturbances, psychological adjustment problems and depression, disorders

of taste and smell. The best way to be safe is to seek medical care of a brain injury

regardless of whether the symptoms are obvious or not.
