You are at risk of developing illnesses like shingles. Shingles is caused by the varicella zoster virus that also causes chicken pox. After having chickenpox as a child, the virus goes dormant in the body but can become active again with high stress, aging, or any weakening of the immune system. You are also at risk of causing flare ups in existing illnesses like herpes, cold sores, Crone’s Disease, Acne, Ulcerative Colitis, and many more. Typically people use coping mechanisms to deal with stress. Some can be healthy, like meditation, working out, or socializing with friends and family. Some coping mechanisms are unhealthy to the body on their own. Alcohol and drug abuse can lead to addiction, heart, liver, lung, and kidney problems .Alcohol and drug abuse also drastically increases your risk for cancer. Overeating as a coping mechanism can lead to diabetes and obesity. Isolation or drawing away from everyone can lead to depression or even suicidal thoughts. Being an active bystander or a “battle buddy” can help recognize symptoms of fellow service member’s dealing with stress. If you see someone using unhealthy coping mechanisms to deal with stress, get them assistance. Assistance can come from a Chaplin, medical, JSMART, etc. Do not be afraid to say something if you see
