Social engagement, in my opinion, is the quickest, most efficient way to reduce stress and avoid overreacting. There is nothing more calming than communicating with another person, or pet, who makes you feel safe and understood. Try and reach out to family and friends. The people you talk to don’t have to be able to fix your stress; they just need to be good listeners. Never forget that opening up is not a sign of weakness.
Last but not least, avoid unnecessary stressors. You can start off by learning how to say “no”. You need to know your limits and stick to them. Following that, avoid people who stress you out. If someone, such as your girlfriend, friend, or coworker, consistently causes stress in your life, limit the amount of time you spend with that person, or end the relationship. Unfortunately, if that someone is your mother or father you’re kind of stuck with them.
Stress seems to take over everyone’s life. Don’t get so caught up in the hustle of life that you forget to take care of your own needs. Nurturing yourself is a necessity, but be sure to nurture yourself in healthy ways. No smoking, drinking too much, comfort food, or procrastination. You won’t even need to depend on any of those. As you exercise regularly, become socially engaged, and avoid unnecessary stress you will hopefully begin to relieve pressure, regain control, and live a stress-free life. Now take a deep breath and
