Professionals working in the educational system find it very rewording to work with children. This is a very diverse field, not only is there a multitude of different backgrounds but there is also different levels of learning and abilities. Moreover, it is important to mention that although we are all individually unique we also have many things in common such as our basic needs. One of the basic needs that we have is the need to belong. To figure out what our place is our home, in our school and in society. As the book Inclusion works states, “There are many reasons to include children with disabilities or other special needs in child care. Children and families want to be accepted and included in their community regardless of ability. They want to truly belong.” (Inclusion Works. Pg2) In other words, regardless of our abilities we all have the need to belong, to not be looked at differently. To have a place to say for example “this is my classroom and this is my school”. Considering this, including children with special needs and or disabilities in a child care setting is a way for us to learn and grow. “When children with disabilities or special needs have all of the opportunities that children who are developing typically have— and especially when they are in an environment with children who are typically developing—they strive toward new goals and achievements, often attaining levels of ability that surprise the adults who care for and about them” (Pg.3). In other word the exposure that children with special needs and or disabilities get at a child care setting, helps them to learn from children in the general education system and motivates them to do much more than if they were just at
