Does My Head Look Big in This? by Randa Abdel- Fatteh is an interesting book because it contains a lot of messages and themes throughout the story. The story is based on a Australian- Palestinian- Muslim high school girl named Amal who experiences the tough of decision of wearing a hijab, or the Islamic headscarf. When she made this decision, Amal is cautious of the changes the decision will bring to her life at school, which also includes her crushes. Adam is the most gorgeous guy Amal has ever seen, from his charming looks to the way he takes his studies seriously. After explaining to a drunk but sober Adam of how relationships before marriage is not allowed in Islam, Adam and Amal become close friends while there is tension between them. While Amal’s love life is complicated, Amal has to help her friend Leila solve a matrimonial crisis. Leila’s mom is being too hard on her when it comes to marriage at the age of 17, convinced that no one can go against their culture. Leila runs away from home after having threatened by her mom that she has to marry a 30 year old bearded stranger or else she will be disowned by her family. Amal is interrogated by Leila’s family and is blamed for supposedly ‘letting Leila run away’. Amal fires a rude comeback to Leila’s parents of how it is good that Leila ran away due to the torture that Leila’s parents are putting on her shoulders. Amal is now disliked by Leila’s parents and is prevented from taking part in any way of communication with Leila by them. On the other hand, Amal is persuaded by Adam to audition for the debate team and actually gets in. Adam and Amal prepare for the big debate when they verse two other high
