Now that we know what the Electoral College is and its function and the important roles it plays in our political system, let us take some time to review if the Electoral College is relevant in the political process today. There are some who may sate the Electoral College is important and it is here to stay. Some have stated that if we abolish the Electoral College we would undermine our two party system that is very fragile. Then there are those who disagree by saying that the Electoral College does not guarantee stability to our two party system or deter third parties or independent candidates. History has shown us otherwise we must remember the Republican Party was born a third party and look how the Republican Party has become a powerful force and the issue of deterring third party or independent candidates is far from the truth the electoral college system provides even more opportunities for third party candidates to create mayhem. When there is a third, party candidate involved in the election there is a great chance there is an opportunity for the third party candidate to take the votes that is needed for the major party candidate to reach the two hundred and seventy mark. There are those who may say that the Electoral College has served its purpose for the time it was created but it is no longer relevant in today’s society. The Electoral College was supposedly created to provide advantage for the small states. The electoral college was not created for this reason. It was to help those slave states that had larger populations, but fewer eligible voters. There are those who may say that the electoral college no longer useful currently, but it has to be determined as to what system will help to sustain or political system and
