Free Playing Observation

I decided to observe Union Park Elementary School students to see the difference between sports playing and free playing. There were about five classes out on the playground while my observation. The background of the students were 12 Hispanics, 8 Whites, and 10 African American. The sex of the children on the playground at the time were 18 females and 12 males. They were all playing together. Unlike my observation at the YMCA, the children at the school were free playing without any parents looking on and telling them what to do. I felt that the students were playing more to have fun than to please someone. I observed most of the children playing hide and seek, tag, climb and throwing a ball around. Some of the students were playing on the monkey bar. The smaller students were playing on the slide. First while I looked at the students run around I could see that some of the younger children with shorter legs were getting tag quicker than the children with longer legs. The students run around with their upper body leaning forward most of the time. Children love to jump regardless of where it is or how perfect they are at it. Some of the students turn jumping to catch the monkey bars into a contest to see who can jump higher and catch it. During their play time, the children who chose to jump for the monkey bar started with their knees bent and propelled themselves up to catch the bar. Some who time the jump and have better eye-hand coordination were able to catch and hold to the bar on the first try. Those who did not have the eye-hand coordination would miss the bar or try to grab after their hands pass the bar. All of the children jumping seemed like they were having fun even if they miss the bar or
