In January of 1759, George married Martha Dandridge Curtis. Martha had already had two children from a previous marriage. Her and George never had any children of their own. Washington became a general in the American Revolutionary War. His troops had a lack of water, food, ammunition, training and many other supplies. One of the battles Washington is most commonly known for his battle on Christmas Day 1776. Him and his troops went down the Delaware River on Christmas Day and attacked the British troops unexpectedly. The winter of 1777 was brutal for Washington and his troops. Over the time frame of six months thousands of soldiers died. In the spring the Continental Army were still in good enough condition to fight the British. George and his troops worked hard to keep the British in New York. In 1782 George’s troops left New York and went to Yorktown, Va. There they attacked General Cornwallis’s troops. The Constitutional Convention was the a meeting between all of the founding fathers on how to establish the government. Others that were at the Constitutional Convention include James Madison and Alexander Hamilton. In 1789 Washington received every electoral college vote. He is the only president to be unanimously voted into office. Washington was a Federalist. His vice president was John Adams. Washington was inaugurated on April 30, 1789 in the nation's capital, New York City. He surrounded himself with amazing people to help his presidency be the best it could be. He had Hamilton as the Treasury Secretary, and Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State. He regularly asked his cabinet for advice. During his first term he had Hamilton lower the war debts. He also establishes many peace treaties with Native American tribes. On May 31, 1790 Washington signed the first U.S. copyright law. He also signed for the capitol to be built in the District of Columbia. In 1793, France and Britain went to war and with some advice from Hamilton he disregarded the alliance the U.S. had with France. The Colonies signed a treaty with France that said they would help the Colonies beat England in the Revolutionary War and that the French wouldn’t take money or land but instead ask that the United States would help them fight against
