Approximately two weeks ago, the advanced bands from both middle schools, and the band from the high school played during the Sherwood football game. Though the football game was set at a date not too long after school started, everyone was surprised by how well the students were able to play their music. This was due to the fact that all of the students from the bands had received an email informing them that they needed to practice the song “Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Swede, during the last few weeks of summer. At the time, it was uncertain as to how many students would actually take the time to practice in their last few weeks before school started. Stye began to lead all of the students out of the stands to behind the stadium, where they then lined up in their assigned positions. After that, the students stood up straight, held their instruments at their sides, and marched out to the field. When the first couple of young musicians came into sight, the crowd went crazy and started cheering again. However, the students contained themselves and didn’t wave at the crowd, but instead kept marching until they were facing the Sherwood side of the stadium and stood in ready position. The whole stadium was quiet and the students waiting for the right moment to start. Then the percussionists gave out the first drumroll and the students began to shout “ Ooga chaka”, which was the first part of their band piece. After repeating this a few times, the trumpets and the other brass instruments kicked off the first few bars of the song. They were joined by the flutes at the “Hooked on a Feeling” part of the song. The students forgot all of their worries and any fears that they’d previously had, and had fun. The bands playing might’ve very well changed the mood of the football team and the crowd, because after most of the students returned to the stands to play more band tunes, the football team played as hard as they could. This ended well for Sherwood, because they won against Tigard. No band student who performed on that day will ever forget the time they had and how they played. Then again, neither will anyone who
