Many schools have the honor code, but the real question is; do they inforce it enough? For in fact, my high school does not have an honor code, yet that is why my eyes witness cheating and plagiarism every day. The honor code should be established in my high school because dishonest students take undeserved credits.
For example, around the end of second semester, I was accused of passing the answers to my classmate. It had me trembling in anger because none of that was true. What had happened was that my classmate was peeking over at my exam, but I never gave her the permission to do so. For this idiotic reason, we both failed the exam. An honor code improves academics and it helps students with honesty. It has been revealed that the honor code has had “two-thirds of students surveyed acknowledging one or more incidents of explicit cheating in the last year,” (McCabe and Pavela). The honor code can prevent or reduce the level of cheating in high school. Also, most students whom have cheated in high school have taken these habits with them to college. The students are reminded of the honor code and the consequences, “sixty-five percent of students say that the honor system is discussed in class and on the syllabus,” (table). An honor code can help promote the trust of others and stop this behavior.
The honor code is monorail but there is consequences violating it. The consequences of violating the honor code are bitter, but they sure will teach you a lesson not to do it again. “Those accused of violating the school’s honor code have either dropped out or been expelled,” (Kahn). Those who fail to report a student who violated the honor code result in a period of probation. Students tend to feel that it is not there responsibility to “confront a fellow student if they knew that he/she had cheated, lied, or stolen,” (Vangelli).
