In the 1986 movie “Hoosiers” the story of a small town high school with a

passion for basketball, the induction of a new unwanted teacher and basketball coach, the struggle from push from the towns people to remain coach, and eventually leading the team to victory in the 1954 state championship. Coach Norman Dale was a past basketball coach who moved to the small town in Indiana, to rid his past as a coach, where he was in trouble for hitting a player. With the small towns passion for their team coach Dales was faced with many obstacles. The towns people did not wanted him coaching, the obstacles of a small team, and the small community lead to a low census to play on the team. Coaches struggles here there, but so was his heart, and the heart to fight for what was loved; he showed everyone what they were capable of by leading his boys to the state championship. He had obstacles in place, but yet he overcame them, not only to prove the towns people wrong, but for the love of his “boys” the team. The movie “Hoosiers” shows many forms of leadership, and with the actions of good leadership skills; the basketball team was able to define the definition of leadership: “A process of social influence in which on person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. All types of sports teams should be able to relate to the definition of leadership. The importance of a good leader should imply great coaching skills. The coach “ Dale” practices good coaching skills by teaching, inspiration, and developmental skills, to aide the team in the mentoring process they need to be successful. The skills implemented by coaching a sports team should be, this type of coach gets involved in all the aspects of the sport, including physical and mental player

The coach is assumed to know more about the sport, and have more previous experience and knowledge. The coach’s job is to transfer as much of this knowledge and experience to the players to develop the most skilled athletes. When coaching its entail to the application of sport tactics and strategies during the game or contests itself, and usually entails substitution of players and other such actions as needed. Many coaches work at setting their own rules and regulations. They are expected to provide and maintain a drug free environment, act as a role model both on and off of the fields and courts. Coaches must ensure that their players are safe and protected during games as well as during practices, according to an article written by the University of Iowa on “ situational coaching styles”. The actions of coach Dale in the movie reflect very much up on the mental/ emotional state of his team. On of the most memorable parts of the film to me is when “Coach” pulls his player out of the game for disobeying him, after already loosing one player to a fowl out, to make a point he signals the refs to play with only four players. When he does this he takes control of his team, and brings them back to what they had been
