Who is Malala? On Oct 9, 2012 a young boy with gun at his side shouted the question at the group of young schoolgirls seated in the back of their school van. The schoolgirls were returning home from their school after writing the school exams in the town of Mingora in the picturesque Swat Valley in Pakistan, which has been under the control of Taliban the Islamic fundamentalist movement. As Malala was identified when her friends instinctively looking at her direction, the young Taliban gunman points his gun at Malala’s head and fires three shots, one of the bullet hit her above the left eyebrow and misses the brain and travels through her face, neck and ends up lodged just above her spinal cord. Pakistan army chief Gen Kayani decided to bring in pediatric intensive care specialist Dr. Fiona Reynolds for a second opinion about Malala’s prognosis. Dr. Reynolds was following the news about Malala and agreed to visit Peshawar hospital in spite of her concerns about security. She recommended that Malala should be transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham for post-surgery care and further treatment. She continued her activism for the right to education for every child, as she was invited by heads of state. She authored a best-selling book titled “I am Malala”. On her 16th birthday, July 12th 2013, declared as Malala Day by United Nations, she addressed the United Nations Youth assembly. She began her address by thanking all who have prayed for her recovery, she gracefully spoke that Malala Day is not her day, it honors all women and men who have spoken against injustice. “"Malala day is not my day. Today is the day of every woman, every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights." In her address to the assembly, she spoke of the need for education for all children. “Let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons,” she said. "One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world." She said Taliban wanted to silence her voice and they failed, instead of silence thousands of voices were raised against Taliban around the world. She said that she wanted education for every child, including the children of Taliban, so that they can have a better future.
