Malala Yousafzai grew up in the Swat Valley in Pakistan until she was 15 years old, when she was shot in the head by the Taliban. All through her childhood Malala witnessed women being mistreated and seen as less than men. She made an effort to raise awareness of the inequality of women, especially in the Middle East. When Malala was just 11 years old, she began writing an anonymous blog for the BBC, describing the Taliban’s rule over Pakistan and the inequality of women’s education. Because of Malala’s efforts towards equality, the Taliban shot her; the Taliban is a radical group that rules over parts of the Middle East including the Pakistani town Malala lived in. Women in Islamic countries must do what they have to do to please their husbands. In most Islamic countries, a women’s number one priority is her husband and making sure he is satisfied. Women must dress a certain way, wearing a burka and a hijab. If one were to not wear her burka and hijab or disobey her husband in any way, she could face serious consequences such as acid being poured on her face (“Pakistan”). There are also many education inequalities in Islamic countries. In Niger, nearly 52% of females do not attend primary school or receive a proper education, while 42% of men do not attend primary school. In Pakistan, 36% of women have never been to school and 28% of men have never been to school (United Nations). These inequalities result in many uneducated women who do not know their rights. Because of their lack of knowledge of rights, women are constantly belittled, degraded, and abused, however they think this is normal because that’s what they have been taught and told by men. Malala has focused on these differences in education and has been contributing to these communities to help women receive an education.
