The confidence and ease of having a commander who trusts your abilities and decision-making are invaluable aspects of your time in command. In my view, competence is one of the most vital attributes while in command. If a commander lacks competence, it impacts the entire unit and can lead to its downfall. If you serve under a commander who can justify their decisions and instill confidence in their abilities, then you are under good leadership. To me, a confident commander signifies a leader who values his role and cares for his subordinates enough to invest time in making informed decisions, which in turn makes your tenure under that command more pleasant. Having mutual trust plays a significant role in the conductivity of the relationship between the commander and subordinates. If your boss trusts you to carry out their task independently and you can trust them not to interrupt or disagree with how you are accomplishing the task, then there will be less friction in day-to-day life.
