For a long time, I was taught leadership was someone who always stepped up to the plate and took control. Over time, I learned that that was only a portion of what leadership is about. Leadership is about being the person people can depend on. It is not a title you can just claim, it is a title that people bestow upon you. To really be considered a leader you must know how to correctly talk to the people who are around you, and be the one they know they can count on. During the first two years of high school I was a very soft-spoken person. On the occasion, I would try to speak up and speak in front of large groups of people, but for the most part, I would stutter and completely forget what I was saying. I ran for the position of student and class council secretary my freshman, sophomore, and junior year, and in the end I never won the position. After those results, I believed that I should not run my senior year, since it would just end the same way as the years before. What I did not consider was the fact that during those three years, I was already exemplifying leadership qualities. I was the person in the school that would help any and everybody with studying and whatever issues …show more content…
At the time, I still believed that I should not run at all and should just sit and watch the girl they have had for senior president win for the fourth year in a row. That was until I got a text on my phone from a girl who I never really talked to, asking if she could nominate me for one of the positions. I did not think much about it but said it was fine by me if she really thinks I should. By the time class nominations came, two people spoke up and nominated me for the position of class council president.
