Cultural Awareness of North Korea

North Korea is a secretive country situated in South East Asia. Joseph Stalin was a Soviet leader who established the North Korean government. Joseph Stalin appointed Kim Il Sung as President of North Korea. This created the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on September 9th 1948. North Korea has a closed country policy not allowing many visitors in or out of the country, which leaves the rest of the world oblivious to the true conditions experienced by North Korean citizens.
Korea was divided after World War II into 2 nations, North and South Korea. The Korean War started in 1950 separated the North and South. This separation left the residents of the North under communist rule. The war ended in 1953

North Korea is composed by approximately 120,000 mountainous square kilometers making it around the size of Mississippi. North Korea’s terrain is made up of mountains and small plains. Travel is dangerous is the winter due to heavy snow along with the summer due to rainfall engorging the rivers and flowing rapidly downstream along the mountains. The constricting terrain of North Korea does not leave much room for expansive cities. North Korea has 14 cities with a population over 20,000. There are estimated to be approximately 400 cities with populations under 20,000. Pyongyang, located off the Taedong-gang River, is the largest city, as well as, the capital with a population close to three million. The infrastructure in North Korea is undeveloped and lacking. There is estimated to be less than 20,000 miles of road and even that small amount is unpaved. A deficiency of oil and gas is caused by the nation’s low political standings in the world. The government controls nearly all organizations, businesses, and events. The North Korean government releases only the propaganda they wish to share with the rest of the world. In North Korean military factories 33 army tanks, vehicles and artillery pieces have been produced since the 1950’s. The North Korean army uses three variations of artillery at this time. The 122mm model 1963 (D30) Howitzer is the standard artillery battlefield system replacing the M-30 Howitzer. The 152mm model 1955 (D-20) was built in the late 1950’s has proven to be reliable and designed rugged enough. The 130mm model 1954 (M-46) is a Soviet cold war- era howitzer. The M-46 was fielded by many other countries and military forces in the Middle East, Africa, South America, and allied states in Europe. North Korea has approximately thirteen thousand artillery guns for the army. North Korea’s Army was established as the anti Japanese militia. Kim Jong Il boosted the army to one point two million soldiers during his seventeen year rule. Kim Jung Un focused the army on becoming a nuclear arms force. North Korea realized their army was out dated on equipment and short on supplies during their train up to become a nuclear force.
