It is important that China is bordering North Korea, as they have very close ties with one another in the world of international trade and national relations. North Korea trades most with China, receiving many resources from them. This makes it easier to ally together and takes away the worry of having to watch all of your surroundings. Ties between China and North Korea are so close as China fought alongside North Korea during the Korean War to protect their mutual ideology of Communism and today both states view each other as allies sharing common values and converged interests.

On the eastern edge of the country there is the Kaema Highlands that contains the highest elevations in the entire country. North Korea is mostly made of hills and mountains that are separated by deep valleys. North Korea also has four principal river systems that run through it. This includes the Yalu River, Tumen-gang, Taedong-gang, and the Ch’ongch’on-gang. These are very important to North Korea as they are some of the most important navigable waterways in the whole country, being crucial to transportation. The Yalu River also marks the spot in which North Korea won an attack in 1950 during the Korean War, which was successfully countered by South Korea and the United
