The main lesson activity is group rotations with multiple text examples for each type of author’s purpose. Students will each be given a recording sheet and each rotation will focus on one of the types of author’s purpose. There will be four rotations and at each rotation will be different samples of fiction and nonfiction text in the form of task cards. Using these task cards, the students will analyze the author’s purpose and verify that the card belongs at that station. After verifying, the students will be asked to analyze the texts to find common characteristics of how the purpose of text is presented. These common words and phrases will clarify how the author’s purpose has affected the text and make it easier for the students to identify the author’s purpose of a text. As the students rotate through the four stations they will have opportunities to analyze over twenty pieces of text for author’s purpose.
