1. What qualifies as "communication" with children and parents?
Communication is the exchange of information, so when communicating with parents it is important to have a conversation. When addressing parents caregivers should make the conscious effort to use I statements when talking about your feelings. Communication with parents should involve a two-way channel. With children it is also important to have a conversation with, do not talk at them or down to them.
2. How can you maintain regular contact with parents?
You can maintain regular contact with parents by doing a variety of things. One thing a care-center can do is to send emails regularly to parents/guardians regarding events and reminders. One thing care providers can do is hand notes to the parents/guardians at the end of the day with information permanent to the child and to the center. For example, checklists would not be helpful method to track behavior. But anecdotal observations combined with a running record would be. Anecdotal observations are helpful because it helps caregivers know the child personally and their habits.
3. How should you behave when doing a formal assessment?
When performing a formal assessment it is important to stay out of the way. When formally observing, you are trying to observe what normally happens in the classroom,you cannot do that if you are distracting. One way to not cause distractions is to sit in low chair towards the back of the classroom. Another way is by not interacting with anyone in the classroom, including the teacher. Try not to make any contact with a particular child or talk to a child.
