Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones, in which the density and quality of bones are reduced. As the bones become more fragile and porous, the risk for fracture is increased. (Osteoporosis). Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease in the United States; resulting in physical, psychosocial, and economic consequences. In individuals who develop osteoporosis, there are many who are unaware of the disease until a fracture occurs (Osteoporosis). Signs and symptoms of Osteoporosis often manifest when a fracture occurs. Nutrition is the study of the nutrients in foods, and the body, sometimes also the study of human behavior related to food (Sizer & Whitney, 2014) Nutrients are components of food that are indispensable to the body’s functioning, serving multiple functions in the human body (Sizer & Whitney, 2014) In order to attain these nutrients, individuals must eat a balanced diet that contains enough calories, and an adequate amount calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K. (Sizer & Whitney, 2014). In order to prevent Osteoporosis it is crucial to consume these essential nutrients that help minimize bone loss and maintain health. Physical Activity is important to the body because it aids in building and maintaining bones. Dormancy is detrimental for the body because it can lead to bone loss. In order to prevent Osteoporosis, strength and resistance training must be performed in order to build strength in the bones. Exercise can also improve the condition because it can reduce the risk of falls by increasing muscle mass and strength, and improving coordination and balance (Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, Bone Health). Osteoporosis harms communities because men and women suffer from this bone disease that possibly could have been prevented through proper education and plans of action. In order to prevent Osteoporosis, and individual must adhere to an adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, proper nutrition, and exercise. Calcium intake is important during every stage of life in order to meet the changing needs of the body. An adequate amount calcium in the diet can be increased by including foods that are high in calcium include sardines, milk, tofu, broccoli, cheddar cheese, turnip greens, and whole grains ( Sizer & Whitney, 2014). Vitamin D is important to calcium absorption and bone health. Vitamin D can be obtained through the diet or through skin exposure to sunlight. Food sources of Vitamin D include, enriched cereal, salmon, tuna, fortified milk, cod liver oil, and sardines. In order to properly increase health, it is important to consume equal intake of both nutrients, because balance within vitamin D and calcium is important for health (Sizer & Whitney, 2014). Individuals in communities should stop smoking and minimize the intake of alcohol. Individuals who smoke increase their chances of bone loss, compared to nonsmokers. Intake of excessive alcohol can predispose people to bones loss and fractures due to poor
