Language barriers did not allow me to receive the proper academic support from my father, as he would have like to provide me with. About four years ago, my family and I moved from our hometown to a new city with much less diversity. Leaving everything behind and having to learn to adapt to a new environment was a drastic change. Being one of the few Hispanics that attend Appleton North, I often felt out of place. Insecurities about my abilities arose. I felt inferior. Uncomfortable with being different, I would refuse to speak my mind for the fear of getting judged for my distinct perspective. My father only having a minimum education of a high school level, our comprehension of the educational system was limited. The emptiness I once felt losing my mother, inspired me to gain the passion of helping others. I want to especially help people in their times of darkness and help them gain hope of a brighter future. My desire is to become a bilingual nurse and serve the multicultural welfare of my community. I believe the adversities and challenges that I have encountered at a young age, have shaped me into the stronger person that I am today. Through life experiences, I learned that change is good. Coming a long way to finally realizing the importance of taking control of my own future, I am determined to help others achieve the same goal. I have left the doors of opportunities opened for the following generation of Hispanic students. Aware of the difficulties minorities face due to cultural barriers and lack of resources, my intention is to advocate the importance of education and the process of achieving it to all Hispanic families. I will continue to serve as a mentor and role model to younger students and hope to one day create my own scholarship fund to give back to my
